Penetrating damp is the result of water/moisture ingress successfully transferring horizontally from the outside brickwork onto the inside of your property, often known as lateral damp.
Unlike rising damp, penetrating damp can occur anywhere on your property including your ceilings, or above the fresh hold of 1.2 metres rising damp occurs up to.
Any property type can suffer from penetrating damp, often we see the older houses tend to suffer more, this is due to the solid walls which are often part of the integrity of old houses. Solid walls make the transfer from the outside in easier for any water/moisture molecules.
Lateral Penetrating damp can occur due to several reasons, most commonly we see structural defects as the main culprit, ranging from inadequately pointed buildings to leaking guttering.
Penetrating damp often occurs on external walls but can also present itself on internal walls, this can be down to a leak in the chimney breast adjacent to the neighbouring property.
Porous walls are one of the main reasons we see penetrating damp occurring, as brickwork ages it loses the ability to keep moisture out, subsequently allowing water ingress to project itself on the external walls of the building.
As with any damp problem identifying the cause is the first and foremost, whether the Penetraing damp is caused by leaking gutters or high ground levels its best to rectify these problems before starting work on the inside.
As explained in the previous sections penetrating damp can be caused by several reasons, for example, if your penetrating damp is caused by a leaking gutter fixing the gutter and allowing the internal plaster work to dry out by installing a dehumidifier should do the trick, if the gutter has gone unnoticed for a length of time and the internal plaster work is saturated along with the internal brickwork we would suggest to remove any affected plaster work.
