The presence of none breathable materials such as tanking slurry's, vinyl wallpaper & paints can increase the chance of the effect's of Rising Damp been seen higher up. This is usually salt deposits left over by the Rising Damp.
The water travels upwards as result of capillary action, This is when the moisture seeks means of evaporation and will climb through the tiny holes/tubes present in your brick, block and stone work. The water continues to climb until gravity counteracts the upwards force of capillary action which usually has a cut off point no higher than 1.2 metres.

Rising Damp usually occurs when the original DPC (Damp Proof Course) becomes inadequate. This could be down to a number of reasons, i.e. The old Damp proof course could have deteriorated over the years allowing rising damp to bypass the original DPC.

DPC's can fail as a result of high ground levels, this is when over time the outside ground has been raised higher than the original DPC causing water to 'Bridge' the DPC. Another way your DPC can become 'Bridged' is if your cavity is full with debris, Whether this is left over building material's, birds nest's or even insulation it can cause water to travel up past your DPC and start the Capillary action. Outside structures such as flower pots against the external wall or raised decking can also all lead to a 'Bridge' in the DPC.
Treating Rising Damp first begins with identyfiyng the cause, wether this is a bridged DPC, Internel plaster work been in contact with the damp substructure or inadequately installed DPC.
Once the cause of the Rising Damp has been determined any affected walls will be prepped for treatment, this includes dust sheeting all remaining property left in the building & floors sheeted out using reinforced plastic sheeting.
All existing skirting boards will be removed and replaced free of charge !!, Affected plaster work will be hacked off to the height of 1200mm. The new Chemical Formulation Damp Proof Course will be installed into the approptaite mortar joint, Internal & External skins (Brick Work) will both be injected according to British Standard 6576.
All walls will then be replastered using a BBA prebagged renovating plaster system, such as Renovating Limelight this will be used as a 2 part system in conjunction with BBA Approved High Impact Finishing Plaster. All plaster work will have a minimum gap of 65mm between the plaster and substructure. Any Treated walls will be re-plastered full height insuring no joint is visible & to make redecorating that little bit easier !!!..
